About the PRIME-O

There is a need to understand, measure, and optimize client and caregiver engagement in pediatric rehabilitation interventions to achieve successful outcomes, enhance goal attainment, and increase client satisfaction. However, there are no measures of client engagement in the pediatric rehabilitation literature. The Pediatric Rehabilitation Intervention Measure of Engagement - Observation version (PRIME-O) captures observations of engagement in an intervention session, with engagement defined as active involvement and investment (King et al., 2014). The 10-item PRIME-O is an observer-rated measure that captures observable signs of engagement of (a) the client (i.e., interest and enthusiasm, use of strengths-based language, openness to what is being said/done, overall comfort and confidence in engaging with the service provider), (b) the service provider (i.e., interest and enthusiasm, use of strengths-based language, overall comfort and confidence in engaging the client, listening/communication behaviors), and (c) the client-provider interaction [i.e., overall warmth of the interaction (rapport), collaborative nature of the interaction]. The PRIME-O provides a multifaceted view of affective, cognitive, and behavioral components of engagement in pediatric rehabilitation. The PRIME-O has potential utility for research, clinical practice, and continuing education.
